Guardianship establishes a legal relationship between a child and an adult. This does not terminate the legal relationship between the child and the child's parents. The biological parents are legally required to provide financial support for all of their children.

Guardianship papers must be filed in court. One of the court's investigators will likely interview you as well as the child and the child's parents if they can be reached. The court must find that the appointment is in the best interests of the child and only after the investigator recommends you to the judge. The judge usually holds a hearing first before appointing you as the legal guardian.
